Personal Facts and Details
Notes

Note
Joseph Irvin Seward came to Madison County, Indiana from Rush County, Indiana; and it is believed his ancestors migrated to this country from England. In his early years, Joseph Seward was associated with Frederick Bronnenberg in the cattle and horse business and accumulated considerable wealth; which was reduced considerably in later years due to business reverses. Joseph Seward became a minister late in life, and in the year 1897 was one of the founders of the Chesterfield Christian Church.

One of Reverend Joseph Irvin Seward's sons, Wesley William Seward, served as a First Sergeant in Company F, 57th Indiana ‎(Volunteers)‎ Infantry Regiment, Union Army USA during the American Civil War. On December 31, 1862, during the Battle of Stones River - a.k.a. Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; the captain of the regiment was killed, and Wesley took his place and was also killed in action during the battle. The Reverend Seward traveled to Tennessee in a horse drawn buggy and brought Wesley William's body back along with a small cedar tree, which was planted at his grave site in the Mechanicsburg, Indiana Cemetery. Wesley William Seward has a grave marker identified as A-112 in the Stones River National Cemetery located within the Stones River National Battlefield near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Both Wesley William Seward and his brother Thomas Benton Seward enlisted in the army on November 18, 1861, and served in the same army unit during the war.
